Artistic Asilah From Tangier Port

Travel outside of Tangier to the picturesque town of Asilah, considered a center for culture and art.
Boarding your coach at the pier, it’s a sixty minute drive along the western shores of the Atlantic Ocean to reach Asilah. This now peaceful town has been occupied over the centuries by the Romans, Spanish, Portuguese and the Phoenicians. It was the Portuguese who built the town’s bastions, towers and imposing ramparts, which today are the setting for delightful seaside walks and restaurants renowned for their seafood dishes. Inside the ramparts, you’ll find the old Medina shelters, small art workshops and cultural galleries that present the works of artists from Asilah and the surrounding region. Asilah hosts numerous festivals, but the one held every August practically turns the entire town into an art gallery. It is then that artists come from all over to exhibit their work in the setting of the old palace and in the streets. Some even paint directly on the walls of the town.
Upon arrival, you’ll stop at the Portuguese main gate, “Bab el Bahr” which features an escutcheon of the King of Portugal Arms. From here, you’ll do some sightseeing in the old Medina, passing by the Raissouli Palace for an outside visit. During the annual summer festival, the Palace transforms into a Culture Palace. Your guided tour of the city continues as you admire the colourful designs on the walls and wander through the small souks of Asilah and its art district.
Prior to re-joining your coach for the return trip to the cruise ship pier in Tangier, you’ll be treated to a refreshment break at one of the local restaurants.
